When Caregivers Carry Too Much
What do a Registered Nurse and an energy healer have in common?
Empathy is an obvious starting point. Both roles attract people who naturally step forward when others are struggling. Both involve sitting beside people during vulnerable moments and offering steadiness when circumstances feel uncertain.
If that nurse also happens to be a Reiki practitioner, then the overlap becomes even clearer. The
language of care begins to sound very similar.
Today I spoke with a client who works within the medical system and who carries deep insight into the
real need for self-care within healthcare environments. Our conversation echoed something I regularly
see across wellness professions, medical environments, and energy work.
Caregivers give generously. They move from patient to patient, client to client, offering attention, skill,
and compassion in every interaction. Over time, that level of care can come with a cost if there is no
intentional way to reset.
In many helping professions, there is a term for this experience: compassion fatigue. It describes the
quiet exhaustion that can develop when someone consistently holds space for the pain, uncertainty, or
vulnerability of others without enough time or tools to release what has been absorbed.

Have you ever finished a shift and realized you are still carrying the emotional tone of the day?
Do certain conversations replay in your mind long after work ends?
Do you notice tension lingering in your body after supporting someone through a difficult moment?
Does your nervous system stay activated long after the interaction is over?
Many practitioners recognize these experiences. The emotional and mental load of caregiving work can
quietly accumulate over time.
The Emotional and Energetic Load of Caregiving Professions

People working in medicine, wellness, and caregiving professions regularly encounter individuals
during the most intense periods of their lives. These moments may involve illness, uncertainty, grief,
family stress, or difficult decisions.
Practitioners are often asked to remain calm and supportive while others are overwhelmed.
That responsibility requires tremendous presence.
Over time, the emotional and energetic weight of this work can build if there is no system for releasing what has accumulated.
Many practitioners notice that fatigue does not only come from long hours. It also comes from carrying
the emotional and mental weight of many interactions.
Practitioner Reset: Supporting Healthcare and Wellness Professionals
There are ways to clear accumulated emotional load and restore internal steadiness.
There are also ways to strengthen the internal system so that compassion and presence remain
available without depletion.
This is the intention behind our monthly Practitioner Reset evenings.
These gatherings are designed specifically for professionals who work closely with people in
emotionally demanding environments.
What This Means for Medical Professionals
Medical practitioners often describe a desire for greater internal stability during demanding situations.
When the internal system becomes clearer and more regulated, many professionals notice
improvements in several areas:
• stronger internal stability under pressure
• greater professional presence during patient interactions
• increased emotional and cognitive capacity
• improved nervous system regulation during stressful situations
• clearer perception when making complex decisions
• increased mental bandwidth during long shifts
What This Means for Energy Healers and Wellness Practitioners
Energy workers often encounter a similar challenge from a different angle. Strengthening the system
allows practitioners to experience:
• cleaner flow of healing energy or Light
• a stronger energetic structure through which energy can move
• a clearer connection to source so the practitioner does not feel drained
• greater emotional and cognitive clarity during sessions
• less carry-over of client emotions or experiences after the session ends
A Place for Practitioners to Reset and Restore
Practitioner Reset supports what leadership research refers to as vertical development. Horizontal
education adds more skills or techniques, while vertical development strengthens the practitioner
themselves.
This development expands the capacity to hold complexity, tolerate uncertainty, and perceive the
bigger picture during demanding situations.
Practitioner Reset evenings provide a space where caregivers can release accumulated load, restore
internal steadiness, and strengthen the system that allows them to continue doing meaningful work.
When practitioners feel clearer, steadier, and stronger, they are naturally better able to care for
themselves and the people who rely on them.
